Upon receiving the third cautionary card in a single season, a player's disciplinary record is subject to modification. Should this athlete participate in five consecutive matches without accumulating any additional yellow cards or facing further disciplinary actions, the tally of yellow cards will be decremented by one, reducing the count from three to two. Currently, within the MLS regular season, this player holds two chances to qualify for the "good conduct reward." In the event that the player remains unmarked with red or yellow cards and avoids any additional penalties across the next five matches, the total number of yellow cards will be further reduced by one. At that point, the player will have only one yellow card and one remaining opportunity for the "good conduct reward."
Prior to the 2025 campaign, the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) also adopted a comparable rule. This marks yet another instance in North American soccer where a disciplinary incentives system is employed to foster sustained exemplary conduct among players.
